Chapter 13: Your head is there to move you around

It may be a testament to my lack of energy these days that more and more titles are just song lyrics lazily transcribed. Blame school. Blame writing. Blame me.'

A short one tonight.

I didn't do much of anything on Sunday. I sat around watching TV and writing reviews until dinner, and afterward indulged in a little CFL. I'm not a fan - in fact I find football uniquely boring - but it was a bit of a favour. Tim was apparently really jazzed about the Grey Cup game and wanted to pretend it was as big a deal as the Superbowl, which it's very clearly not. So we sat with him a bit, pretended to care about one team or the other (Winnipeg or Saskatchewan) and had a Caesar or two. That's a drink with a kick. It contains clam juice.

Today, I somehow crawled out of bed and was almost feeling energetic. I couldn't capitalize on that, however, and fell asleep, well, basically everywhere I could. It was a distinct reminder why I don't go to school on mondays often anymore, although if I could energize myself I might get something out of the lectures. My angst lies in philosophy and a conflict of literacy. If I weren't constantly reading books for narrative, I'd find time to do the readings for philosophy. I feel rather behind.

As for Narrative. I had one of those moments while reading "As I Lay Dying" on the train. People used to ask me why I don't read so much, and I'd explain that whenever I read, I just end up getting ideas to write and then getting distracted. I've been pretty good about this so far this semester, but I had one of those moments and had to drag myself across the pages before eventually scrawling down my ideas. I may not be getting enough out of this book.

Wisely, I plunked some change into a public terminal at Union to check my e-mail. I had a hunch. I had tried to arrange coffee with Amanda for that afternoon, and sent her an e-mail, and figured she'd probably replied with an affirmative or negative. This, despite my noting that "I have no idea how I would know" if she couldn't make it. I suggested I might just show up and see if she does. She sent me an e-mail, which I should not have gotten, explaining that this rather dreary, grey day seemed to her and Brian the best day to go to the zoo. Well that's fine, but I'm not made of free time here.

I raced against time on the TTC to get a coffee of my own at Queen's Park and make it back in time to catch the westbound train, which I did in consierable time. I'm getting good at this. I did end up going to the mall on my own, not expecting Amanda to show up (and she didn't,) reading Faulkner.

As I noted, not much happened over the past few days. This evening was mostly TV watching and a certain amount of writing. I need to devote some serious time to homework tomorrow. I suck at time management. This has been true since at least Grade 7. I've never made much effort to fix it.

You can't hide, and I can't run. Keep on rockin'
