5B: Alone and palely loitering

It doesn't look like I'm going to get any dinner tonight. At least, not until late.

My Great Grandfather died yesterday. The one I've spoken about on this blog, who was 101 years old and couldn't have been a nicer guy during all of them. I portrayed him in my Grade 9 Heritage Monologue, when he was 97. He lived almost exactly 6 years as a widower, having lost my great grandmother in February of 2000. He'd been doing solidly, but something strange begins to happen around the time of your hundredth birthday, if it hasn't already. The process of biological entropy begins to accellerate and consume. That's life. I am thankful that he lived a good life on his own terms and died a dignified death, I assume, in the comfort of his own home. I have not before known a relative who has gone that way, and I'm sure few of you have, either.

So there's a visitation tonight, and Eric had to run out early and get a blazer for tomorrow when he is a pallbearer. So we're without a dinner until afterward. It's a huge debacle. As I said last year when my grandma (dad's mom, as opposed to mom's grandpa,) passed, funerals are the worst. they disrupt the entire order of things and make everything complicated. And people ask if you're okay and everything. I'm fine. I have a very healthy, very natural outlook on death in that I can accept it in cases such as these. If somebody dies young or in an accident, naturally I would be hurt as much as anybody, but when a one hundred and one year-old man passes, all you can really say is "I will really miss him."

And I will.

As I said, I don't care for the disharmony that follows a death. It's difficult to just switch everything around and make time for the funeral. I need to have some kind of control on things, but chaos erupts as it does.

So that's really it. Today was a monday, which meant, mercifully, very little in the way of class. I got some good work done on Half-Past, and realized that I (very reluctantly) have to cut one of the best scenes just because of the photography. I'll figure out a way to get it in there, as some kind of special feature. I want people to see it but no amount of photographic trickery can fix it.

Good night everybody. I wish you all the best, keep on rockin'
-Scott
